What is FAQPage Schema?

Definition

A structured data type (schema.org/FAQPage) that marks up question-and-answer content on a page, enabling rich results in Google and higher citation rates from AI search engines.

In more detail

FAQPage schema is a specific type of JSON-LD structured data that tells search engines your page contains a list of frequently asked questions with their answers. When implemented correctly, Google can display your questions and answers directly in search results as expandable dropdowns — known as FAQ rich results.

The markup structure is straightforward: a FAQPage type containing an array of Question entities, each with an acceptedAnswer containing the answer text. The questions must be visible on the page itself — hidden FAQs that only exist in the schema will be flagged by Google as a violation of their structured data guidelines.

For AI search engines, FAQPage schema is particularly valuable because the question-answer format maps directly to how AI engines process queries. When Perplexity or ChatGPT encounters a page with FAQ schema, the questions and answers are already in a format that is trivially easy to extract, attribute, and cite. Studies show pages with FAQ schema see significantly higher AI citation rates compared to unstructured content covering the same topics.

Why it matters

FAQ schema gives you two benefits: rich results in Google (more SERP real estate and higher click-through rates) and a format that AI engines naturally prefer to cite. It is one of the highest-ROI structured data investments for any content page.
