What is Content Freshness?
Definition
A ranking signal based on how recently content was published or updated — AI search engines cite recently updated content up to 3.2x more often than stale pages.
In more detail
Content freshness refers to how recently a web page's content was created or meaningfully updated. Both traditional search engines and AI search engines use freshness as a quality signal — recently updated content is more likely to contain accurate, current information. Google's freshness algorithm (Query Deserves Freshness, or QDF) actively boosts recent content for time-sensitive queries.
For AI search engines, freshness is even more critical. A study of Perplexity citation patterns found that content updated within 30 days was cited 3.2 times more often than content not updated in over a year. AI engines have a strong preference for current information because their generated answers need to be accurate — citing outdated statistics or deprecated practices damages the user's trust in the AI platform itself.
Practical freshness strategies: update key pages with new data points, statistics, and examples on a regular cycle. Add dateModified to your Article schema markup so crawlers know when content was last refreshed. Avoid superficial updates (changing one word does not fool anyone) — add genuinely new information. Consistency also matters: if your homepage says you founded the company in 2020 but your about page says 2021, AI engines note the inconsistency and may reduce citation confidence.
Why it matters
Stale content gets cited less by AI engines and ranked lower by Google. Regular, meaningful updates to your key pages signal that your information is current and trustworthy — directly increasing both traditional rankings and AI citation rates.
